Design Concept by Stratis Landscape Architecture
Working closely with the client to bring their concept design to life within budget, the new playspace at this local, community-run childcare centre has had an instant effect on the wellbeing of its staff and students. Describing the space as "relaxing" and with better "lines of sight for supervision", the Centre Manager is rapt with the upgrade to what had been a dark, enclosed area.
Pink mudstones are used throughout, edging the sandpit and retaining a central stage upon which a large bush-log teepee provides visual impact, seemingly reaching for the clouds. Log rounds, retained from an existing Elm that had been removed, are used as steppers while vertical logs are offset to provide an interesting border. Offset timber arbors are another feature and frame the teepee from the inside learning areas.
A new, exposed aggregate concrete path in Sunset Mix links all the play areas together, allowing easy movement throughout the space. Three White Ironbarks aka Yellow Gums (Eucalyptus leucoxylon subsp. leucoxylon) planted around the staged area will provide great contrast as they continue to grow.
