This Eltham South residential landscape project was designed by Plantae LA, constructed by ID Landscaping, and planted by the clients - a young family keen to be hands-on in establishing their garden! The brief focused on delivering a robust, functional landscape that could evolve over time while responding to the site’s challenging slope and bushland setting.

A key element of the project was resolving the steep backyard levels. This was achieved through large basalt rock retaining, paired with a bold basalt flat staircase that cuts through the garden beds to connect the main lawn area with the garden shed and chook house. The staircase creates a strong visual line through the landscape while providing safe, durable access across the site. A retaining wall beneath the deck further stabilises the slope and defines usable garden space.

Soft landscape areas include generous lawn zones and garden beds, designed to be gradually established by the family over time. Crushed honey granite paths weave through the garden, offering a natural, permeable surface that suits the informal character of the space and complements the surrounding planting.

At the front of the property, the asphalt driveway is edged with recycled red brick, introducing warmth and texture while referencing traditional materials. An additional hardstand area provides space for extra parking and a basketball ring, framed by natural basalt rockwork retaining and raised garden beds. Together, these elements create a practical, family-friendly landscape that balances structure, play and long-term adaptability.
