This Glen Iris project involved the construction of a new landscape for a certified Passive House, designed by The Sustainable Landscape Company and built by ID Landscaping. The landscape was carefully crafted to complement the home’s high-performance, sustainability-driven design, with a strong focus on water sensitivity, habitat creation and long-term resilience.
The front entrance features bluestone crazy paving, setting a robust and welcoming arrival, with bluestone stepping stones guiding movement through the site and connecting the front garden to the rear. Sawn bluestone stairs were used throughout to manage subtle level changes, creating smooth transitions while maintaining a refined, cohesive material palette across the property.
Water-sensitive landscape elements play a central role in the garden design. Frog ponds, dry creek beds and shallow swales were integrated to slow, filter and retain water across the site, all planted with indigenous habitat species. A natural-style water feature, incorporating rocks, pebbles and aquatic planting, adds visual interest while supporting biodiversity and reinforcing the garden’s connection to natural systems.
A productive zone forms another key feature of the landscape, incorporating BioFilta FoodCubes clad in corten steel, filled with BioGro Wicking Bed Mix and already thriving with vegetables, herbs and flowers. Reo-mesh trellis frames support climbing crops, while surrounding Australian native plantings provide colour, structure and habitat. Together, the garden delivers a functional, environmentally responsive landscape that sits seamlessly alongside the home’s sustainable architecture.
