ID Landscaping delivered the Freeman Park Playground project for the City of Whittlesea, upgrading this local public open space into a more engaging, inclusive and family-friendly playspace. The project forms part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving community recreation facilities and creating welcoming outdoor environments for all ages.
The upgraded playground features a multi-element play unit incorporating slides, climbing structures, monkey bars and a range of physical challenges designed to encourage active play, coordination and confidence. Additional play elements including rockers, standalone slides and swings provide varied play opportunities, catering to children of different ages and abilities.
Natural play was a key focus of the design, with the inclusion of logs, terraced rockwork and timber balance beams that invite imaginative and unstructured play. These elements blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, encouraging children to interact with natural materials while exploring balance, movement and creativity.
Supporting amenities were also upgraded, including a new park shelter, picnic setting and park bench, enhancing comfort and usability for families and carers. Garden beds planted with hardy Australian native strappy plants provide year-round structure and low-maintenance greenery, while 18 semi-advanced trees - including Red Box (Eucalyptus polyanthemos), Mugga Ironbark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon) and Weeping Lilly Pilly (Syzygium floribundum) - were planted to establish future shade, amenity and canopy cover. Together, these works deliver a durable, well-considered playground and open space that will continue to grow and mature with the community.
